As anti-Israel demonstrations persist on campuses nationwide, Chris Hayes, a host on MSNBC, has taken to social media to deride suggestions of deploying the National Guard to restore order at educational institutions.

In a post on Wednesday, Hayes stated, "I deleted a tweet because it was angrily glib, but the earnest point is that sending armed national guard troops to break up peaceful student protests is a terrible and dangerous idea." He had previously made a sarcastic remark, now deleted, saying, "I'm sure the National Guard shooting a few college kids will settle things down and shut everyone up."

Hayes, who has previously advocated for a cease-fire in the Israel-Hamas conflict, has also commented on the arrests of protesters at universities. "As a sheer tactical matter, mass arrests of the protesters seem to be having the opposite of its intended effect," he noted in a Wednesday post.

Furthermore, Hayes has expressed concerns about the absence of "credible reporting" on "antisemitic incidents" at a protest at UT Austin.

Meanwhile, the debate on how to curb the large-scale demonstrations at Columbia and other prestigious universities continues, despite numerous visits from Congress members. House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana, suggested on Wednesday that the National Guard should be deployed to suppress the Gaza cease-fire protests at Columbia University if they do not naturally subside.

Johnson, along with several House Republicans, visited the Ivy League institution in New York City on Wednesday amidst escalating tensions over demonstrations that have led numerous Jewish students to voice their fears for their safety publicly. Students at Columbia University and its affiliate, Barnard College, have established a tent city on campus to protest Columbia's investments in companies associated with Israel.

During Johnson's speech, tensions nearly reached a breaking point as pro-cease-fire student activists repeatedly heckled and attempted to interrupt the Louisiana Republican with coordinated chants, including "We can't hear you" and "Mike, you s---."

The White House has largely refrained from commenting on whether President Biden plans to deploy the National Guard to disperse anti-Israel protests at Columbia University.
