In a recent development, retiring Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT) has publicly endorsed Senator Katie Britt (R-AL) for the vice-presidential nomination.

This endorsement comes in the wake of a media frenzy following Britt's State of the Union rebuttal, which was widely criticized for its unusual delivery. Romney, however, argues that the media's intense reaction indicates that liberals perceive Britt as a significant threat for the vice-presidential nomination.

Romney, who was the Republican presidential nominee in 2012, took to social media to defend Britt amidst the backlash. He wrote, "In a good way, the delivery was over-the-top, out of character — Biden’s, of course. Katie Britt’s too." He further suggested that the media's disproportionate focus on Britt's delivery, rather than Biden's, reveals who liberals fear most as a potential vice-presidential nominee.

Hannah Bleau Knudsen, a journalist for Breitbart News, reported that Britt's rebuttal, while addressing the right topics, failed to resonate due to her speaking style. She described Britt's speech as "full of pauses, hushed tones, and abrupt emotional switches from near-tears to happy-go-lucky." This critique was echoed across the political spectrum, and Britt's response even became the subject of a Saturday Night Live skit, with actress Scarlett Johansson portraying the senator.

Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA and a known ally of former President Donald Trump, also expressed disappointment with Britt's speech. In a social media post, he wrote, "I’m sure Katie Britt is a sweet mom and person, but this speech is not what we need." He criticized Britt for her soft-spoken approach in the face of what he perceives as an aggressive stance from President Joe Biden.

It is worth noting that Britt was relatively late in endorsing Trump, only doing so in December after facing months of pressure. In contrast, her colleague, Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), endorsed Trump in November 2022, and the entire Alabama Congressional delegation endorsed him in August.

Romney's endorsement of Britt, coupled with her late endorsement of Trump and the controversy surrounding her State of the Union rebuttal, could potentially impact her chances in the vice-presidential race. However, it remains to be seen whether she is even in the running for the position.
