David Hogg, a prominent gun control advocate, gained notoriety in the aftermath of the tragic mass shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School in Miami on Valentine's Day 2018, which resulted in 17 fatalities and 17 injuries.

Hogg, like many left-leaning figures, is known for his penchant for dramatic rhetoric that often lacks substantial content. This was evident on Monday when he took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to assert that "men want one thing" — high-speed rail.

"Men want one thing and it’s literally regional high speed rail with affordable, frequent and reliable local public transit connections and mixed use development around transit hubs," Hogg declared.

However, this claim was met with swift criticism. Many users on the platform disagreed with Hogg's assertion, arguing that his statement was more reflective of his personal desires than a universal male preference.

"When you become a man, and that's a really high bar for you, *then* you can speak of what men 'want'. Until then, sit down kid," one user retorted. Another user succinctly asked, "Do you know what a man is?"

The discussion around high-speed rail in the United States is complex and multifaceted. Amtrak, the government-subsidized corporation that operates the national passenger train service, has been a subject of controversy. Despite receiving substantial subsidies, Amtrak continues to operate at a loss.

"Despite being heavily subsidized, Amtrak projects it will lose roughly $1 billion every year and has never in its history turned a profit," stated Adam Andrzejewski, Founder and CEO of Open the Books, in July 2023.

Rep. Troy Nehls (R-Texas), chairman of the House Transportation Committee panel on railroads, argued at a recent hearing that Amtrak needs a more effective business strategy. "Amtrak’s losses arise almost entirely from its National Network and long-distance routes. Rather than focusing on attracting riders to existing routes, Amtrak now seeks to expand this network, risking a greater expense to the taxpayer," Nehls said.

The high-speed rail project in California has also been a significant point of contention. In 2008, California voters approved $9.95 billion in state bond funding to build an 800-mile high-speed rail network. However, 15 years after the bond issue and three years past the expected completion date, not a single train has departed, and not one route has been completed.

The Hoover Institution has described California’s high-speed rail project as "perhaps the greatest infrastructure failure in the history of the country." The institution attributes this failure to a significant breakdown in state governance, which it describes as a "betrayal of Californians."
