In 2010, during the contentious debate over the Affordable Care Act, popularly known as Obamacare, then-President Barack Obama made a solemn promise to the American public.

He assured that illegal immigrants would not be eligible for his proposed healthcare plan. This statement was met with a controversial outcry from Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC), who exclaimed, “You lie!” His outburst was met with boos from the House of Representatives.

Fast forward to the present day, and it appears that Wilson's words were prescient. On Friday, the Biden administration announced a final rule change that would extend Obamacare coverage to younger undocumented immigrants, often referred to as 'Dreamers,' who are protected under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

As regular readers of the Gateway Pundit may recall, the DACA program was established in 2012 by the Obama administration, a move widely seen as a strategy to secure Hispanic votes in the 2012 Presidential election. The program granted work permits to undocumented immigrants who arrived in the U.S. as minors.

Approximately 500,000 undocumented immigrants were shielded from deportation under DACA. However, until now, none of these individuals were eligible for healthcare coverage.

The White House recently released a statement announcing that DACA recipients can begin applying for coverage through Obamacare and state healthcare marketplaces starting in November, conveniently timed for the 2024 election. The administration also proudly stated that over 100,000 undocumented immigrants would qualify for the program, while simultaneously praising the controversial DACA policy.

The statement read, "Today, the Biden-Harris Administration is expanding access to affordable, quality healthcare coverage to Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients. In 2012, President Obama and then Vice President Biden created the DACA policy to transform the lives of eligible Dreamers – young people who came to this country as children—allowing them to live and work lawfully in our country. Over the last decade, DACA has brought stability, possibility, and progress to hundreds of thousands of Dreamers."

Despite President Biden's ongoing calls for Congress to establish a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers and others, he remains committed to preserving DACA and providing Dreamers with the resources they need to succeed, including access to affordable, quality healthcare coverage.

The statement further elaborated, "President Biden and Vice President Harris believe that health care should be a right, not a privilege. Together, they promised to protect and strengthen the Affordable Care Act, lowering costs and expanding coverage so that every American has the peace of mind that health insurance brings. Today’s final rule delivers on the President’s commitment by giving DACA recipients that same peace and opportunity."

The New York Post estimates that this controversial rule change could cost taxpayers up to $300 million. This comes at a time when the southern border remains porous and millions of Americans are struggling to maintain their livelihoods.

However, critics argue that under the Biden administration, the interests of American citizens are often relegated to the back burner.
