In a recent interview on MSNBC's "The Weekend," Representative Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) inadvertently acknowledged the underlying motive behind the multiple impeachment attempts against former President Donald Trump.

While her comments did not reveal anything new, they did serve as a tacit admission of the Democrats' strategy.

Jayapal, during the interview, expressed her disappointment over the Senate's decision not to proceed with impeachment trials against the former president. She suggested that if Trump had been convicted in the Senate, he would have been ineligible to run for the presidency again.

"I go back to the responsibility of Congress here because had the Senate actually gone through with the impeachment of Donald Trump, we would not be in this situation," Jayapal stated. "I remember Mitch McConnell giving a speech that sounded like he was going to vote for convicting, but he didn’t. It really, it is the thing that worries me, upsets me the most about the situation that we are in is we have to have accountability work."

At the time of the impeachment proceedings, McConnell was the Senate Majority leader and had endorsed Trump ahead of his 2020 loss. However, he later clarified in a speech that "criminal behavior will never dominate the United States Congress," and proceeded to certify the election for Biden. McConnell later argued that there was insufficient time for an impeachment trial against Trump before his presidential term ended. This move, in effect, shielded Trump from the repercussions of being an impeached politician, which includes being barred from holding public office.

Jayapal further argued that if Trump is not held accountable for his actions, particularly those on January 6, it would send a wrong message to Americans about what is acceptable behavior. She also claimed that the former president continues to "incite further violence" during his ongoing legal battles.

It was evident at the time that Democrats were keen on impeaching Trump even after he left office, as they feared the possibility of him running for a second term. While convicting Trump was always a longshot, Democrats were hopeful that the Senate would eliminate their most formidable adversary.

With the impeachment strategy unsuccessful, Democrats have resorted to Plan B, which involves bombarding Trump with a series of politically motivated indictments aimed at influencing the outcome of the upcoming November election. By using the government as a weapon against the former president, they hope to entangle him in legal proceedings to hinder his campaign efforts. Moreover, if any of the cases against him result in a conviction, particularly one leading to imprisonment, it would significantly increase the chances of securing a second term for Biden.

Democrats have also collaborated with anti-Trump Republicans to attempt to remove the former president's name from the ballot in various states using the 14th Amendment. However, this strategy was completely thwarted by the Supreme Court, leaving them with only the prosecutions.

Despite his legal challenges, recent polls indicate that Trump is tied with President Biden, suggesting that the strategy to use legal action against him is not yielding the desired results.
