In a recent press conference, former President Donald Trump and Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) addressed the issue of "election integrity," a move that Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) has labeled as "absurd."

Swalwell's criticism comes in light of the indictments Trump is facing over alleged interference in the 2020 election.

Swalwell, during an interview on CNN's "Anderson Cooper 360," expressed his disbelief at the situation, stating, “I mean, it’s too rich that Donald Trump and Mike Johnson are talking to us about election integrity. That’s like having to listen to a lecture by Bonnie and Clyde on bank security. I mean, it’s absurd considering what they did in the 2020 election to try and overturn it.”

The press conference, held at Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort, saw Johnson promoting legislation aimed at preventing noncitizens from voting illegally. However, Swalwell pointed out that the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 already prohibits foreign nationals from voting in federal elections. He told Cooper, “They’re going after something that is already illegal, and by the way, it’s not a thing.”

The joint press conference comes amidst internal strife within the Republican party. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) has been vocal about her desire to see Johnson removed from his position as Speaker, arguing that he is unfit to serve. Trump, however, used the press conference to express his support for Johnson, stating that he was “doing a really good job under very tough circumstances.”

Rep. Ralph Norman (R-S.C.), a member of the House Freedom Caucus, believes Trump's endorsement could bolster Johnson's position. He told reporters, “If Trump came out and gave him his full support, yes, it would help.”
