In a shocking incident that has left a community reeling, two girls aged 12 and 13 were apprehended on Friday in Washington DC, in connection with the brutal killing of 64-year-old Reggie Brown.

The arrest followed the apprehension of another 13-year-old girl on Thursday, who is also implicated in the crime.

NBC 4 reports that all three minors have been charged with second-degree murder. Courtroom footage revealed the trio brutally assaulting Brown, kicking and stomping on him after an unidentified man in a blue coat reportedly threw him to the ground.

The gruesome event unfolded on the 6200 block of Georgia Avenue in the early hours of October 17. Brown was declared dead at the scene, with a post-mortem examination attributing his demise to blunt force trauma.

The question of whether the young suspects would be tried as adults was addressed by a spokesperson for the DC attorney general. Speaking to ABC 7, they stated, "Under DC laws protecting the confidentiality of juvenile criminal cases, it is illegal for our office to comment publicly or share any information related to specific juvenile cases." They further clarified, "Per DC law, children under 15 years of age cannot be charged as adults. The maximum sentence for juveniles who are not charged as adults is commitment to the Department of Youth Rehabilitative Services (DYRS) until 21 years of age."

DC councilwoman Kathy Henderson has called for a revision of the city's laws concerning minors charged with crimes, suggesting that the parents of such children should also bear responsibility. She argued, "As long as there's any perception that children are going to be exempt, that you can commit a crime, you can kill someone, you can hijack someone, you can take someone's car, you can kill them, you can do all of these horrific things and then really not be held fully accountable, it's going to continue to happen."
