The award, a bronze bust of Twain, is a tribute to the enduring legacy of the legendary American writer and satirist, born Samuel Clemens, renowned for his storytelling prowess. This year, the prestigious award was presented to comedian Kevin Hart at a ceremony held at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. on Sunday night.

The Mark Twain Prize is a lifetime achievement award in comedy, and the ceremony is a celebration of American humor. This year's event was notably devoid of politically charged humor, a decision likely influenced by Hart's own comedic style. In a red-carpet interview, Hart stated, "The idea of politics is not one that I associate with humor."

This sentiment resonates with many, as the current political climate often evokes feelings of anger and frustration rather than amusement. However, the ceremony was not entirely devoid of political humor. Dave Rubenstein, chairman of the Mark Twain Prize and host of the event, quipped that if Twain were alive today, at 214 years old, he would be 'just about the age when you can run for president.' This joke was a subtle nod to the age of current President Joe Biden, 81, and former President Trump, 77.

Other political jabs were delivered by comedians Chris Rock, Chelsea Handler, and Tiffany Haddish. Rock warned of 'dark days coming' if Trump wins in 2024, while Handler joked about Hart creating his own 'border crisis' by crossing the Canadian-U.S. border during the COVID-19 pandemic. Haddish humorously claimed to have found her new 'baby daddy' after a man who 'looks like he works in Congress' laughed enthusiastically at her jokes.

The event was attended by a host of comedians who came to support Hart. Among them were Jerry Seinfeld, rapper Lil Dicky (real name Dave Burd), Jimmy Fallon, who performed an original comedy song about Hart, Nick Cannon, J.B. Smoove, Keith Robinson, Regina Hall, and musicians Robin Thicke and Nelly.

When asked how he navigates comedy in a politically divided country, Hart responded, "That's a great question. I mean, honestly, I don't really partake in it. I'm a product of bringing people together. My comedy is one that's global – and when you're global, you're in an environment where laughter is the priority." He added, "The idea of politics for me is not one that I associate with humor."

Dave Chappelle, a previous recipient of the Mark Twain Prize, praised Hart as "a very powerful dreamer." He spoke of Hart's achievement of selling out a 53,000-seat football stadium — Philadelphia's Lincoln Financial Field in 2015 — as an inspiration to himself and Rock. "You made me dream bigger, and you're younger than me," he told Hart.

Hart's illustrious career includes appearances in 93 movies and television shows, with nine more in development. Other comedians who have received the Mark Twain Prize include Richard Pryor, George Carlin, Whoopi Goldberg, Bob Newhart, Carol Burnett, and Dave Chapelle. Bill Cosby, who was honored in 2009, had his award rescinded in 2019 following allegations of sexual assault.

The ceremony was recorded and will be available for streaming on Netflix from May 11.
