The reelection campaign of President Joe Biden is reportedly mobilizing a substantial operation to counter the potential impact of third-party candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., according to Axios

As Kennedy prepares to announce his vice-presidential pick, the Biden campaign and the Democratic National Committee (DNC) have assembled a team of staff dedicated to undermining Kennedy's campaign.

Kennedy's campaign has been gaining traction, with polling figures surpassing those of any independent candidate since 1992, as reported by Axios. "Mr. Kennedy plans to take votes from both President Biden and former President Trump," Stefanie Spear, Kennedy's campaign press secretary, told Axios. "Kennedy has the highest favorability among the candidates and outpaces Presidents Biden and Trump among independents."

The White House has highlighted the Kennedy family's criticism of RFK Jr.'s presidential bid. A recent photograph reportedly showed President Biden with approximately 50 members of the Kennedy family at a White House St. Patrick's Day celebration.

The DNC has previously suggested that RFK Jr. is acting as a "stalking horse" for former President Donald Trump, due to their shared megadonor, businessman Tim Mellon. "We know the GOP is already working to prop up third-party candidates like Robert Kennedy Jr. to make them stalking horses for Donald Trump," DNC spokesperson Matt Corridoni told Axios. "We're going to make sure voters are educated and we're going to make sure all candidates are playing by the rules."

The Biden administration and its allies have a history of working to hinder third-party candidacies. In March, the DNC established a team focused on communication strategy and opposition research to counter third-party and independent candidates in the 2024 election, as reported by NBC. The party subsequently formed a group of lawyers tasked with overseeing how independent candidates are pursuing ballot access, according to The New York Times.
