This was in exchange for the release of 40 hostages held by Hamas in Gaza, according to two Israeli officials.

The agreement has been met with criticism, as it does not appear that Hamas has made any significant concessions to secure the release of nearly twice the number of prisoners compared to the proposal made in Paris.
