Are They Using An Abacus? California STILL Counting Mail-In Primary Ballots Featured

The state of California continues to tally votes from its primary elections held over a fortnight ago, with numerous races still awaiting the verification of tens of thousands of ballots.

As reported by CNN, the Democratic and Republican presidential primaries are among the most significant of these races, with an estimated 95 and 93 percent of votes counted respectively at the time of writing.

Other races, such as the House District 20 Special Primary, have only 81 percent of the vote in, indicating that tens of thousands of ballots remain uncounted. While election officials in California may argue that these races have already been decided, the failure to complete the process in a timely manner could be a harbinger of future complications.

The 2020 presidential election was marred by allegations of voter fraud, largely due to the excessive time taken to count ballots in several swing states. Most of these states eventually swung in favor of Joe Biden by the slimmest of margins.

The Federalist, which initially reported on the ongoing issue, attributed the delay primarily to a law concerning mail-in ballots signed by California Governor Gavin Newsom. The law, enacted in response to the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, made permanent the state's policy of mailing a ballot to every entry on California's voter registration lists. The legislation also required localities to provide ballot drop boxes "up to 28 days before election day," as per the Los Angeles Times.

The report further detailed how the system has been manipulated, effectively turning election day into an election month. California's adoption of same-day voter registration has contributed to delayed election results. Voters who register on Election Day must complete a provisional ballot, leaving election workers to verify their eligibility in the ensuing days and weeks.

Additionally, California counts mail-in ballots postmarked by Election Day and received by local officials up to seven days after the supposed election date. As stated by The New York Times, election officials must also "contact the voter to give that person the opportunity to correct," or "cure," a ballot if their signature does not match the one on file with the state. Voters have until two days before the election's certification to correct any errors on their ballot.

Given these regulations, it is unsurprising that officials are permitted up to 30 days to count ballots in California. Democrats have fully exploited such "election month" policies passed through the fully Democrat-run state government.

The protracted process has led to a loss of faith among Republicans in a system that allows election officials to delay declaring a result for weeks after the polls close. The argument is made that if some of the world's poorest and most underdeveloped countries can finalize their election returns within a few hours, so should all American states. Failure to do so will only continue to erode trust in an election system that is already viewed with deep suspicion by tens of millions of voters.
