In an unexpected turn of events, Kim Godwin, the President of ABC News, has stepped down from her position.

This move has taken many in the mainstream media by surprise. Godwin was the first black woman to helm a broadcast television news division, and her departure will undoubtedly be a disappointment to some. However, former President Donald Trump and a significant portion of her former staff, as reported by CNN, do not share this sentiment.

Trump, in a post on Truth Social, expressed his satisfaction over Godwin's resignation. "Happy to report that Kim Godwin, Head of ABC, has resigned," he wrote. "Could it be the unfair reporting on EVERYTHING TRUMP? In any event, GOOD RIDDANCE!" He further added, "Hopefully somebody else will be able to control George Slopadopolous and the rest of the Fake News Thugs over at ABC? Best wishes Kim!"

Despite Trump's conjecture, Godwin was a contentious figure within ABC. According to unnamed staff members, CNN reported that Godwin's "polarizing leadership led to plummeting employee morale." The timing of her departure was also unexpected. Her announcement of her "abrupt" resignation on a Sunday evening reportedly sent shockwaves through the newsroom.

CNN had previously reported that Debra OConnell, who was appointed by parent company Disney to oversee Godwin and the news division, was conducting a review of Godwin's performance. OConnell had privately expressed dissatisfaction with the state of affairs at ABC News. More than two dozen staff members and others close to the network, who requested anonymity, told CNN that Godwin's leadership had a detrimental effect on the organization's morale.

Staff members accused Godwin of several significant missteps, including a hands-off management style, lack of a strategic vision for the newsroom, and the appointment of an inner circle that alienated staff. Axios also reported that unnamed sources felt Godwin prioritized promoting herself as a leader over investing time with ABC News' staff and show teams.

Godwin's resignation was effective immediately. OConnell will assume control of the newsroom "for the time being," as reported by The Associated Press. Godwin, in an email to the ABC News staff, announced her decision to retire from broadcast journalism. "I have been fortunate and blessed enough to have done almost every job there is in this business," she wrote. "But after considerable reflection, I’m certain it’s the right one for me as I look to the future and prioritize what’s most important for me and my family."
