Boeing whistleblower John Barnett was tragically discovered deceased in Charleston, with reports indicating a suspected suicide.

Barnett, who was actively involved in providing testimony in an aviation case under whistleblower protections, was found lifeless in his truck at a local hotel.

Brian Knowles, Barnett's legal representative, shared insights with Corporate Crime Reporter, revealing, "John had been back and forth for quite some time getting prepared. The defense examined him for their allowed seven hours under the rules on Thursday."

Having served as a quality manager at Boeing for over three decades, Barnett raised concerns upon his transfer to the Charleston, SC plant, responsible for the construction of the 787 Dreamliner. In a 2019 interview with the BBC, Barnett disclosed alarming practices within Boeing, including the deliberate use of sub-standard parts and identified issues with emergency oxygen systems that could jeopardize their functionality during crises. Despite Barnett's claims of a rushed assembly process, Boeing refuted the allegations.

Knowles recounted, "I cross-examined him all day yesterday (Friday) and did not finish. We agreed to continue this morning at 10 a.m. (co-counsel) Rob (Turkewitz) kept calling this morning and his (Barnett’s) phone would go to voicemail. We then asked the hotel to check on him. They found him in his truck dead from an ‘alleged’ self-inflicted gunshot. We drove to the hotel and spoke with the police and the coroner."

John Barnett, aged 62, leaves behind a legacy of integrity and dedication to aviation safety. Recent safety incidents involving Boeing aircraft, including a tire loss on a Boeing 777 departing from San Francisco and a mid-air panel blow-out earlier this year, underscore the ongoing challenges faced by the aerospace giant.
