The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office in Oregon executed a search warrant on Friday targeting individuals who were suspected of freezing puppies to feed their pet snakes.

The operation resulted in the discovery of 18 frozen puppies, which were subsequently transferred to the Oregon Humane Society for further investigation into the cause of death, as disclosed by Oregonian sheriffs in a Facebook update on Saturday.

Law enforcement officials revealed that multiple snakes were found on the premises, with one snake being confiscated by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) as part of the ongoing inquiry. The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the investigation into the matter was still in progress.

A spokesperson for the sheriff’s office informed KOIN 6 News that Columbia County District Attorney Joshua Pond was in the process of preparing charges against the implicated individuals. Joshua Pond, appointed as the district attorney by Democratic Governor Tina Kotek in November 2023, as reported by The Columbia County Chronicle & Chief.

According to petMD, pet snakes are typically fed frozen prey purchased from pet stores, which is thawed in the refrigerator before feeding. In contrast, wild snakes like anacondas use their size to overpower and consume prey such as turtles, crocodiles, jaguars, and even humans, as highlighted by Round Glass and Rainforest Cruises.
