In an unexpected move that has left its citizens bewildered and anxious, the entire police force of the small Maryland town of Ridgely has been suspended.

The town, nestled on Maryland's Eastern Shore, has left the responsibility of public safety to other agencies, while the residents remain clueless about the reasons behind the suspension of the Ridgely Police Department.

Laura Cline, a long-standing resident of Ridgely, expressed her concerns, stating, "What’s very concerning is that they didn’t communicate with us in an honest and open way. Treat us with respect. We’re adults — thinking, rational adults who deserve the truth."

Holly Justice, a local business owner, echoed these sentiments, saying, "We were blindsided. It makes you question the integrity of people who are supposed to protect and serve."

The town's officials announced last week on Ridgely's website that the three-member commission had "suspended with pay the entirety of the Ridgely Police Department." They also revealed that the Office of State Prosecutor is investigating potential misconduct.

Gennie Woo, who has been a business owner in downtown Ridgely since 1983, voiced her skepticism, saying, "It doesn’t add up. Everybody is skeptical about what happened. We just want to know how and why."

The police department's website reveals that it employs six officers to serve its population of approximately 1,600 residents.

In the interim, Ridgely has arranged for officers from the nearby Caroline County Sheriff’s Office to respond to emergency calls. Caroline County Sheriff David Baker confirmed that the Maryland State Police would also be assisting.

However, this arrangement has raised concerns among residents about potential delays in response times. There are also fears that a diminished law enforcement presence could make them more vulnerable to potential criminal activities.

Despite these concerns, crime rates in Caroline County, which includes Ridgely, have been remarkably low for decades. Federal crime data shows that the county has reported only four homicides since 2000.

The police department's primary responsibilities include addressing minor public safety issues such as lost or stolen items, participating in community events, and supporting local businesses.
