Maggie Goodlander, wife of President Joe Biden's National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and a former Department of Justice official, has declared her candidacy for New Hampshire's 2nd Congressional District.

The announcement was made on Thursday, marking her entry into the 2024 race.

Goodlander brings a wealth of experience to her campaign, having previously served as a foreign policy advisor to the late Republican Senator John McCain of Arizona. Her resume also includes a stint as an intelligence officer in the Navy Reserve, as highlighted in her campaign announcement video. Goodlander, a Democrat, also drew attention to her role as counsel during the impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump in 2019.

In her campaign video, Goodlander expressed her readiness to challenge the status quo. "The fact is, the bullies have too much power in America right now — right-wing judges, extreme politicians, big corporations all have too much power," she stated. "I'm ready to take these bullies on. That's why I'm running for Congress."

Her professional background also includes clerking for the U.S. Supreme Court and teaching constitutional law at the University of New Hampshire and Dartmouth College.

Goodlander's campaign announcement video also touched on a deeply personal issue. She shared the heartbreaking story of delivering a stillborn baby, using it as a springboard to discuss the controversial Roe v. Wade decision. "My husband Jake and I, we've been trying to start a family. But when I was almost 20 weeks pregnant, we found out that we had lost our little boy, and he died on Easter," Goodlander revealed. "This is where the effects of the Supreme Court decision in Dobbs became very, very real for me. It is wrong that women in this state and across the country are denied the basic healthcare services that they need and that they deserve, and I want to fight for those freedoms every day for as long as I can."

Goodlander is vying for the seat currently occupied by Democratic Representative Annie Kuster, who has served since 2013 and is set to retire. The Cook Political Report categorizes the seat as "Likely Democrat," with a partisan score of "D+2."
