Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is facing accusations of double standards in its content moderation policies.

The social media giant is reportedly hosting thousands of explicit advertisements for artificial intelligence (AI)-generated companions and "girlfriend" applications, according to a report by Wired.

These advertisements feature AI-generated images of realistic, scantily clad women in stereotypically pornographic poses. Some of the ads even promise users an experience that will "get you off in one minute." The AI characters offered for role-play include a "stepmom" and a computer-generated teenager in a hijab, among others.

The proliferation of these AI-powered sex services on Meta's platforms has sparked outrage among human sex workers. They argue that Meta is unfairly favoring these services while simultaneously banning human sex work on Facebook and Instagram, labeling it as "adult content."

Gemma Rose, director of a UK-based sex-worker rights organization, expressed her frustration with Meta's policies. "As a sex worker, if I put anything like 'I will do anything for you, I will make you come in a minute' I would be deleted in an instant," Rose told Wired.

Despite Meta's advertising policies prohibiting "depictions of people in explicit or suggestive positions, or activities that are overly suggestive or sexually provocative," at least 29,000 ads for explicit AI "girlfriends" have been published across Meta's social media platforms.

Rose and other sex workers have accused Meta of turning a blind eye to the not-safe-for-work (NSFW) experiences dominating the AI companion ads, even though the company's policies explicitly prohibit nudity and the sale of sex, including sexting.

In response to these allegations, Meta spokesperson Ryan Daniels stated that the company actively reviews and removes any ads that violate its policies. "When we identify violating ads we work quickly to remove them, as we're doing here," Daniels told Wired. "We continue to improve our systems, including how we detect ads and behavior that go against our policies."

Despite these assurances, as of April 30, approximately 1,500 ads for "AI girlfriends," 190 of which contained NSFW content, were live across Meta's social media platforms in the US, according to Meta's ad library.

The AI girlfriend industry is projected to become a billion-dollar business by 2024. Some TikTok users have already admitted to flirting with ChatGPT’s NSFW-like alter ego, further highlighting the growing popularity of these AI companions.
