The family of O.J. Simpson, the infamous former NFL player and convicted felon, has declined to donate his brain for Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) research, according to a family spokesperson.

Simpson, who passed away at the age of 76 on Wednesday, is scheduled to be cremated in Las Vegas on Tuesday, as confirmed by a representative of his estate to The New York Post.

Simpson's family has reportedly issued a 'hard no' in response to numerous requests from scientists to study the ex-running back's brain for CTE research. CTE, a degenerative brain disease, can only be definitively diagnosed post-mortem. As awareness of the disease has grown, many former football players have pledged to donate their brains for research after their death.

Malcolm LaVergne, Simpson's long-time attorney and executor, confirmed that all necessary paperwork for Simpson's cremation has been finalized. CTE is characterized by symptoms such as aggressive behavior, memory loss, depression, anxiety, and impaired judgment.

Simpson, known as 'The Juice,' had a distinguished career in the NFL, playing 11 seasons, nine of which were with the Buffalo Bills. He won four NFL rushing titles, rushed for 11,236 yards, scored 76 touchdowns, and played in five Pro Bowls. His most successful season was in 1973 when he became the first running back to break the 2,000-yard rushing mark.

The family announced on his official X account that Simpson, who also had a career in Hollywood, died on Wednesday after being diagnosed with prostate cancer. His murder trial for the killing of his ex-wife became a national sensation.

Following his death, social media users called for Simpson's brain to be tested for CTE, a disease found in numerous deceased former football players. However, it will now remain unknown whether his football career had any impact on his brain.

One social media user wrote, 'In all seriousness I really hope OJ Simpson's family has his brain checked for signs of CTE, out of respect for the Brown and Goldman families, even for his own kids'. Another added, 'I hope OJ Simpson gave consent to allow his brain to be studied to see if he had CTE. My condolences to his children.'

In 2018, Simpson expressed his own concerns about possibly having CTE. 'I get concerned,' Simpson told The Buffalo News in Las Vegas. 'I do recognize that it probably affects you in short-term memory more than long-term. I know with me, I have days I can't find words. I literally cannot find words or the name of somebody I know.'

Simpson's legacy was forever tarnished by the June 1994 murders of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and Ronald Goldman in Los Angeles. His arrest, following a televised slow-speed chase, marked a shocking fall from grace. Although acquitted of murder in 1995, a separate civil trial jury found him liable for the deaths in 1997 and ordered him to pay $33.5 million to the families of Brown and Goldman.

A decade later, Simpson was convicted of armed robbery and other felonies following a confrontation with two sports memorabilia dealers in a Las Vegas hotel room. Imprisoned at age 61, he served nine years in a remote northern Nevada prison, including a stint as a gym janitor.
