New York City, despite not being commonly associated with seismic activity, has a history of experiencing earthquakes, with some notable occurrences over the years.

Prior to the recent 4.8 magnitude quake on Friday morning, seismic events measuring over 4.5 on the "M Scale" were infrequent. The Cornwall-Massena earthquake in 1944, registering 5.8, and another in 1884 measuring 5.3, stand out among the recorded tremors.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the effects of the 1884 quake were felt as far as Cleveland, Ohio, approximately 450 miles away from NYC. Observations from that time noted structural damage in several states, including Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania.

In 2011, a 5.8 magnitude earthquake originating in Virginia shook the east coast, reaching residents in Washington DC and NYC. However, the most recent significant quake before Friday's event was a 1.7 magnitude tremor in Queens in January 2024, causing building vibrations and power outages.

The last earthquake measuring at least 2.5 on the "M Scale" occurred in Marlboro, New Jersey, in 2020, registering at 3.1, as reported by the United States Geological Survey. Local resident Mike Page vividly described the experience, stating, "It woke me up like a freight train coming down the tracks, it sounded like a sonic boom," to NBC News.

The most recent seismic event above the 2.5 threshold originating within New York City itself was recorded in Manhattan on 27 October 2001, measuring 2.6.
