An elderly American woman, aged 80, tragically lost her life when a 5-ton bull elephant in Zambia violently charged at a safari vehicle, flipping it multiple times.

The incident occurred during a photography expedition with Wilderness Zambia, a renowned safari tour group.

The woman, whose identity remains undisclosed, was part of a six-member tourist group when the horrifying incident unfolded on Saturday. The Telegraph reported that the group was under attack by the enraged elephant.

Keith Vincent, CEO of Wilderness Zambia, issued a statement explaining the incident. "At around 9:30 a.m. on Saturday morning, the six guests were on the game drive when the vehicle was unexpectedly charged by the bull elephant," he said.

A passenger captured the terrifying moment on video. The footage shows the elephant charging towards the safari vehicle along a bush-lined road. The vehicle comes to a sudden halt when its path is blocked, and the elephant lunges at it, flipping it over.

Vincent defended the expertise of their guides, stating, "Our guides are all extremely well-trained and experienced, but sadly in this instance the terrain and vegetation was such that the guide’s route became blocked and he could not move the vehicle out of harm’s way quickly enough."

In response to the incident, Kafue National Park’s management dispatched a helicopter to evacuate the victims. "This is a tragic event and we extend our deepest condolences to the family of the guest who died. We are also, naturally, supporting those guests and the guide involved in this distressing incident," Vincent added.

The group was reportedly staying at the luxurious Lufupa Camp in Kafue National Park, Africa's largest game reserve. African Parks, the organization managing the park, also oversees 22 other wildlife sanctuaries across Africa.

Arrangements are currently underway to repatriate the woman’s body to the U.S., as reported by the Nigerian Bulletin.
