Egg-Stinction Alert: PETA Pushes Jill Biden Make Changes To Easter Celebration Featured

The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is once again urging First Lady Jill Biden to make a significant alteration to the annual White House Easter Egg Roll.

The animal rights organization is advocating for the discontinuation of the use of chicken eggs in the event.

This is not the first time PETA has made such a request. Last year, the organization suggested that wooden eggs or painted stones should replace chicken eggs. However, the First Lady did not comply with PETA's request, and the event proceeded as usual.

This year, PETA has proposed a new alternative: potatoes. The organization has cleverly used puns to emphasize its point, suggesting a name change from the White House Easter Egg Roll to the White House Potato Roll. PETA refers to eggs as "cholesterol bombs" and argues that potatoes, in stark contrast, are not only cheaper but also healthier than eggs. Moreover, using potatoes would not disturb birds.

In a letter to Jill Biden, PETA President Ingrid Newkirk outlined the organization's opposition to egg factory farms. She wrote, "I’m writing on behalf of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), the world’s largest animal rights organization, with more than 5 million members and supporters in the U.S., to respectfully suggest an appealing way to modernize the White House Easter Egg Roll—one that would be truly inclusive and welcomed by every tot who doesn’t eat eggs for religious, cultural, or environmental reasons or because they object to the way animals, including hens whose reproductive systems are exploited for eggs, are raised and killed these days. Instead of promoting the deleterious factory farming and slaughter industries, will you please initiate the annual White House Potato Roll?"

Newkirk further explained that Easter is not a time of renewal or joy for chickens on egg factory farms. She noted that it can take up to 36 hours in typically hellish conditions for a hen—who spends her entire life in a cage smaller than a letter-sized sheet of paper—to produce just one of the thousands of eggs slated to be used at the White House Easter Egg Roll. In stark contrast, a potato roll wouldn’t exploit any sentient beings and would encourage empathy and kindness to animals while supporting potato farmers in the U.S.

However, the idea of children hunting for dyed potatoes instead of eggs may not be as exciting. Easter is a time of renewal, and eggs are traditionally viewed as a symbol of spring and new life. Historians suggest that early Christians adopted the egg as a symbol of the resurrection, with the empty shell serving as a metaphor for Jesus’ tomb.

The custom of the Easter egg hunt has religious origins and dates back to Germany in the late 16th century. Protestant reformer Martin Luther is said to have organized egg hunts for his congregation, with men hiding the eggs for women and children to find. This was a nod to the story of the resurrection, in which the empty tomb was discovered by women.

The Easter Egg Roll is one of the longest traditions held at the White House, first held in 1878. Despite attempts by lawmakers to prevent it, the event has continued due to popular demand. The White House kitchen supplies wooden spoons for children to roll the eggs in a race. The event is so popular that a lottery system is used to select participating families. The event can attract almost 40,000 people each year.

Despite PETA's efforts, it seems unlikely that the White House will comply with their request this year. The White House Easter Egg Roll is scheduled for April 1, a date that coincidentally falls on April Fools Day this year.
